5 Myths and Facts About Cellulite and How to Get Rid of It

If you do an internet search, you’re rewarded with over 43 million results in under half a second. Unfortunately, there’s no shortage of misinformation when it comes to trying to figure out what cellulite is and, perhaps more importantly, what you can do about it.

1. A weighty subject

One of the most common myths when it comes to cellulite is that it only affects people who are carrying extra fat. This statement is patently false. Cellulite affects people of all body weights, from the very skinny to the extremely overweight, and everyone in between.

2. It’s a woman’s world

Sorry, ladies, we’re afraid this one is true. Studies report that 90% of all women have some degree of cellulite though only 10% of men suffer the same condition.

There are several reasons behind this disparity. First, the underlying collagen network, which is our skin’s foundation, is different between men and women. In men, the collagen fibers form a criss-cross pattern, which holds fat better. In women, the collagen fibers form more of a straight up-and-down pattern, which allows fat deposits to push through to the surface.

On top of this, women have more layers of fat in certain areas (buttocks, thighs, and abdomen) than men, which is why women are prone to cellulite in these areas.

3. You are what you eat

There are many theories about nutrition and cellulite, but the bottom line is that to be able to effectively fight back against puckered skin, you should approach the problem from many different angles. And the approach is one of common sense. For example, the more fat you pile on through sugars and carbs, the more your fat cells begin to bulge through your collagen fibers, so any effort to reduce your fat is time well spent.

But that’s not the only approach, exercise goes a long way toward fighting fat buildup, firming up muscles, and promoting better circulation, which helps to send in the resources necessary to firm up your skin.

A large portion of the 43+ million internet results are made up of products and services that claim to banish cellulite. Whether it’s topical creams or magic pills, cellulite usually doesn’t respond to most of these products and services because they fight the fat, but do little to tackle the real problem — your collagen.
